Easy On The Eyes – A Guide To Relief From Eyestrain

There are more than 10 million visits to eye doctors every year for CVS related problems.

Eyestrain is a common concern in today’s computer dependent world.

It even has a new name, “computer vision syndrome“.

Some of us don’t even realize we are exhausting our eyes until we get hit with the symptoms: burning, headaches and blurred vision. Eyestrain isn’t just a prevalent condition, it’s one we’ve learned to tolerate.

We’ve all read about the usual tips for relieving eyestrain and admit it, most of us just ignore them. However, it’s important to consider the impact of screen glare on the eyes more than ever.

We’re not only working on computers, but constantly checking cell phones, tablets and other devices. Symptoms of eyestrain can occur within a mere two hours of work in front of computer, so our peepers are being pushed to the limit and rarely getting a break.

Last year I went for an eye exam and expected the usual bad news, (I have terrible vision). The results were different than I had expected. My vision had improved, slightly.

The reason? I was in between gigs for most of the year. Having logged less time in front of the laptop had actually improved my vision.

I can’t promise that your eyesight will improve, but the tips below may alleviate the symptoms of eyestrain. Give them a try and give your peepers some time recharge.

Dim The Lights

Overhead lighting and a super bright monitor screen will fry your eyes. A good way to know if your screen is too bright? Step away and look at your screen. If it is as bright as a regular light source, it’s too bright. If you work in an office and don’t have control over the lighting, use a glare screen.

Get Some Space

Let’s all do the arm’s length test. Stick out your arm and if you can touch your screen, it’s too close. Enlarge text size on a laptop so you can move the screen back. You should never find yourself squinting. Adjust your settings so you have no problems viewing and reading the screen at arm’s length.

Eyedrops Are Your Friend

You can try to consciously blink on a regular basis, or you’ll ignore the advice and suffer dry eyes like the rest of us. Time to invest in eyedrops, which have evolved from the days of useless saline formulas. The new gel based drops are cooling, lubricating and not annoying. They work, big time! Your eyes will feel heavenly.

The 20-20-20 rule

Eyes use many muscles to focus and move. The 20-20-20 rule helps keep our muscles in shape. Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
